아주 오래 전에 마을 사람들에 의해 살인마로 몰린 마법사 월터 맥킨(Walter Machen: 존 캐러딘 분)이 교수형을 당하기 전 할로윈 데이에 잭코(Jack-O-Lantern: 패트릭 모간 분)라는 호박 괴물이 나타나 마을을 피로 물들이게 될 것이라는 저주를 내렸다. 마법사가 죽고 1년이 지난 할로윈 데이에 잭코가 나타나자 마법사를 죽인 켈리가의 아서 켈리(Arthur Kelly: 마이크 코너 분)는 괴물을 처치하고 죽는다. 그로부터 80년 후 할로윈 데이 하루 전날, 사람 몸을 두 동강 내고 머리를 잘라버린다는 잭코의 전설 얘기를 하며 집으로 향하던 중 숀(Sean/David Kelly: 라이언 라트쇼 분)의 친구 라비(Robbie: 쏘어 쉐이거레이스 분)가 비비안(Vivian Machen: 캐서린 월쉬 분)이라는 낯선 여자를 보고 마녀라고 부르며 괴롭히자 숀이 나서 그녀를 구해준다. 숀의 집까지 온 비비안은 고조부에 대한 책을 쓰기 위해 마을을 방문했다며 숀의 부모에게 자신의 방문 목적을 밝힌다. 잠시 후 낮잠을 자던 숀은 피투성이가 된 두 사람이 마법사에게 살려달라고 외치는 악몽을 꾸고 깨어난다. 밤이 되자 마을의 젊은이 브래드 일행은 켈리 농장자리가 있었던 곳에서 아서 켈리의 묘비를 발견하고는 무덤을 파헤친다. 그러자 기다란 낫을 든 호박괴물 잭코가 무덤에서 나타나 브래드 일행의 목을 쳐서 죽인다. 잭코는 마을을 돌아다니며 희생자를 하나 둘 늘려간다. 한편 유령의 집 꾸미는 일로 분주하게 보내는 숀의 부모 앞에 비비안이 자신의 족보를 가지고 찾아온다. 족보에서 월터 맥킨의 사진을 발견한 숀은 그가 자신의 악몽 속에 나타났던 사람임을 확인하고 깜짝 놀란다. 이에 비비안은 아서 켈리와 월터 맥킨의 이야기를 들려준다. 할로윈 데이, 부모의 곁을 떠난 숀은 이웃집 아주머니 캐롤린(Carolyn Miller: 리네아 퀴글리 분)과 함께 할로윈 사탕을 얻으러 다닌다. 시간이 늦었음을 확인하고 서둘러 집으로 향하던 두 사람 앞에 잭코가 나타나는데..
