피어스의 아내 린과 딸 미케일라는 피어스의 이탈리아 출장에 따라오는데 피어스가 업무를 볼 동안 린과 미케일라는 베수비오 산에 위치한 고대 도시, 폼페이를 관광하러 떠난다. 하지만 얼마 지나지 않아 갑작스럽게 베수비오 화산이 폭발하고, 특수 부대원 출신인 아버지는 딸과 아내를 구하기 위해 헬기를 공수해 베수비오 산으로 날아가 목숨을 건 구조 작전을 실행하게 되는데...
