When the rival Home Guard units of Major Wallop and Minor Wallop are sent on battle manoeuvres, George Singleton (Formby) launches his own unique style of commando raid against neighbouring Major Wallop to steal a Vickers machine gun. The raid fails and Singleton loses his Lance Corporal's stripe, so he and a little evacuee girl named Irene (Vera Frances) decide to fall back on 'Plan B' - to build their very own tank.

The Secrets of Life series (1934-50) may not conform to modern expectations of nature filmmaking, inclined as it is towards giving cute fluffy creatures human names and characteristics. But it couldn't be accused of shielding kiddies from the harsher realities of the food chain, as this exercise in ruthless Darwinism demonstrates to unintentionally hilarious effect. A more than usually eccentric narrator introduces us to the newborn bunny quartet of Donald, James, Charles and Clifford, but as the film's title gives away, "the boys" aren't all long for this world as they face an assault course of hungry owls, predatory badgers, shotgun-happy gardeners and aerial bombardment (no harm in a little anti-Nazi detour, this is 1942 after all). 어느날 밤, 시내 전체가 정전이 되고 사고가 발생한다. 경찰은 수사를 통해 누군가 고의로 꾸민 사보타지임을 밝혀내고 범인을 찾아나선다. 경찰은 시내에서 극장을 경영하고 있는 벌록을 유력한 용의자로 지목하고 그를 감시하도록 테드를 투입한다. 테드는 극장 옆 야채가게 점원으로 위장취업하여 벌록과 그의 부인 그리고 그녀의 어린 동생 스티브에게 접근하고, 테드는 벌록의 부인과 스티브에게 호감을 느끼게 된다. 한편, 테러 집단은 큰 폭탄을 이용한 사보타지를 계획하고 벌록에게 폭탄을 운반하는 임무를 맡긴다. 벌록을 미행하던 경잘은 그에게서 결정적인 단서를 찾아낸다. 토요일 오후 1시 45분까지 피카디리 광장으로 폭탄을 운반해야 하는 벌록은 테드가 자신을 감시하고 있는 것을 알고 초조해 한다. 그러는 사이에 새장에 실린 폭탄이 도착하고, 생각다 못한 벌록은 폭탄을 필름으로 위장한 뒤, 스티브에게 그것을 운반하도록 시킨다. 영화 필름인줄만 알고 심부름을 나선 스티브는 가는 길에 이것저것 구경하느라 시간 가는 줄 모른다. 결국 스티브가 탔던 버스는 광장에 도착하기도 전에 폭파하고 만다. 스티브의 사망소식을 확인한 누나는 벌록을 증오하며 결국 그를 죽인다. 그때 그녀를 찾아온 테드는 벌록의 시체를 발견하고 그동안 품어왔던 사랑을 고백하며 함께 도망가자고 제의한다. 한편 새장에 폭탄을 실어서 운반했던 노인은 자신의 새장이 단서가 되는 것을 두려워한 나머지 새장을 찾으러 극장을 찾았다가 경찰과 대치상황에 놓이게 된다. 결국 그 노인은 스스로 폭탄을 터뜨려 자살하고 경찰은 이 사고로 벌록도 같이 사망한 것으로 결론을 내린다. 테드는 흐느끼는 벌록 부인을 부축하며 영원히 함께 할 것을 다짐한다.
