대니 보일 감독의 '쉘로우 그레이브'와 비슷한 제목을 가진 '쉘로우 그라운드'는 쉘던 윌슨 감독의 두 번째 호러 작품이다. 마니아들의 입에 오르내리던 이 영화는 언더그라운드의 잘 알려지지 않은 다수의 판타지 필름 페스티벌에 전해져 적지 않은 찬사를 받았다. 가장 주목할만한 것은 한 때 찬란했지만 상업영화의 홍수 속에서 그 빛을 잃어 비슷한 비주얼과 주제로 단지 재생산되기만 하는 호러 영화 속에서 유일하게 독창적인 작품이라는 평을 받은 것. 긴박감 넘치게 몰아치는 오프닝에서부터 영화는 섬뜩한 비주얼을 보여주는데, 나체의 소년이 온몸에 걸쭉한 피를 뒤집어쓰고 칼을 든 채 공간을 가로지르는 것이 그것. 잠시 후 숲 속에 있는 보안관 사무실에 도착하면 이제부터 이 새롭게만 보이는 공포의 이야기가 시작된다. 엽기적인 살인 행각들이 언뜻 '13일의 금요일' 풍 슬래셔 작품을 연상시키는가 싶더니 카메라가 피로 물든 이 소년을 클로즈업하기 시작하면서는 어두운 수수께끼를 푸는 심리 스릴러의 분위기에 도착하게 된다. 여기서 그치지 않고 영화는 미지의 초현실적인 포스에 농락당하는 인간 군상들을 보여주며 '오멘'이나 '엑소시스트'에서 출연한 악령의 오컬트적인 모습까지도 차용하는 대범함을 보인다. 또한 '나이트메어'의 신비도 곁들여져있어 묘한 느낌이다. 숲 속을 배경으로 몇 안 되는 등장인물들이 이리저리 쫓고 쫓기며 만들어내는 긴장감도 출중하지만 점차 밝혀지는 그 비밀의 전말을 따라가다 보면 어떤 올바른 드라마적인 힘까지도 느끼게 된다. 피가 난무하는 하드 고어 신, 관객의 비명소리를 담보로 하는 소름끼치는 공포, 짜임새 있는 이야기 전개와 무명배우들의 열연, 감각적인 촬영과 비주얼, 훌륭한 사운드트랙에 힘입어 근래 보기 드물게 인상적인 작품이다.
