A chemical spill has caused the occupants of Beverly Hills to be forcibly evacuated. A retiring football player left behind, finds that the toxic gas emulating from the spill is a bogus front for a heist set up by fired police officers out to plunder the city of all its valuables. Finding himself siding with a corrupt cop who was once apart of the plan until he discovered the city's mayor had just been blown away, by one of the chief crooks in charge. Now both on the run with no help in sight...both must do whatever they can to stop these murderous looters.

운영상의 부정으로 해체되었던 텍사스 주립대 미식 축구팀은 그 후, 대쪽같은 코치 철학의 소유자로 유명한 제네로(Coach Gennero: 헥터 엘리존도 분)를 초빙, 팀을 재창단한다. 팀의 구성원들은, 매경기를 전투처럼 여기고 덤비는 풀백, 헬멧은 여자들이나 하는 것으로 아는 하프백, 센터에 반한 여자 킥커 등 학생 신분의 아마츄어 선수들로 그들의 형편없는 실력에 남감해진 코치는 과거 무적의 쿼터백으로 활약했던 블레이크(Paul Blake: 스콧 바쿨라 분)를 영입키로 한다. 34세의 나이로 아직 풋볼에 미련이 남아있던 블레이크는 옛 스승의 요청을 혼쾌히 수락, 새롭게 선수생활을 시작한다.

실화를 근거로 한 이 영화는 1967년 8월 27일부터 시작된다. 베트남 전쟁이 한참이던 때에 각지에서 젊은이들이 해병대로 지원해온다. 타이런 워싱턴(Tyrone Washington: 스탠 쇼 분), 빌리 레이 파이크(Billy Ray Pike: 앤드류 스티븐스 분), 엘빈 포스터(Alvin Foster: 제임스 캐닝 분), 비니 파지오(Vinnie Fazio: 마이클 렘벡 분), 데이브 비즈비(Dave Bisbee: 크레이그 왓슨 분) 등이 중심이 된 C중대는 2달동안의 훈련을 마치고 베트남의 다낭에 파견된다. 각자의 개성을 지니고 전쟁과 싸워나가는 동안 팀웍의 중요성을 깨닫게 되고 그러는중에 하나씩 전우들은 죽어가는 것이다. 베트남군과의 친목 도모를 위한 축구대회가 개최되는데 베트남군의 사기를 위해 그 경기에서 져주라고 요구한다. 이에 화가 난 C중대 병사들은 자신들의 명예를 걸고 열심히 시합에 임하여 그 시합에서 승리를 거두고 상관의 명령에 불복종한 이유로 최전방으로 가게 된다.
