Anaïs Nin

Portrait photographer Elsa Dorfman found her medium in 1980: the larger-than-life Polaroid Land 20x24 camera. For the next thirty-five years, she captured the “surfaces” of those who visited her studio: families, Beat poets, rock stars, and Harvard notables. As pictures begin to fade and her retirement looms, Dorfman gives Errol Morris an inside tour of her backyard archive.

The US writer Henry Miller (1891-1980), scandalous and nonconformist creator, hated by the most recalcitrant puritans, was a vilified genius, considered a threat, accused of being a sexist, of consciously pursuing the destruction of every civic principle; but he was also someone venerated as a saint, as a sex guru; and today as one of the most important characters of the twentieth century.

1939년 사랑과 예술의 도시 파리. 미국에서 건너온 꿈 많은 소설가 엘레나에겐 예술과 사랑에 미친 친구들이 있다. 지독한 독설가인 도날드, 스페인 화가 미구엘, 관능적이고 비밀이 많은 가수 라일라, 그리고 라일라의 연인 아리엘 등. 엘레나는 어느날 새벽 세느강에서 보트를 타고 있는 로렌스의 분위기에 반해 그와 격렬한 사랑에 빠진다. 하지만 우연히 창녀와 밀애를 나누는 로렌스를 발견하고 결별을 선언하자 그는 파리를 떠난다. 이렇게 사랑도 떠나고 돈도 떨어진 그녀에게 익명의 에로소설 수집가가 후한 원고료를 제시하며 에로소설을 쓸 것을 제안한다. 하지만 첫 작품을 거절당한 엘레나는 자신의 능력을 보여 주기 위해 소설에 더 매달리게 되고 자신의 성적 잠재의식이 미로를 탐색하기 시작한다.작품이 전개될 수록, 욕망의 자각으로 엘레나가 그리는 소설의 캐릭터 또한 성숙해지고, 그녀의 마음은 어느새 수집가에게 사로잡힌다. 한편 프랑스엔 2차 세계대전의 전운이 감독고, 거리의 사라들은 갈수록 광포해진다. 불안한 거리거리에는 미친듯이 육체만을 탐하는 사람들로 가득차는데.....

아나이스는 소설가 헨리를 처음 본 순간 남편과는 다른 매력을 느끼게 되고, 그의 책을 읽은 후에는 그의 문체에 깊이 매료된다. 아나이스는 헨리의 친구들과 어울려 감히 상상도 할수 없는 쾌락의 늪에 빠져들게 되는데, 그런 그녀에게 있어 가장 우상이 되고 있는것은 바로 헨리의 아내인 준. 준은 아나시스에게 동성애를 향한 신비의 문을 열어주었고, 그녀의 출현과 함께 아나이스는 여러가지 새로운 경험을 하게 된다. 아나이스는 성적 경험의 한계를 초월한 순수함을 느끼고 싶어 하지만 자기만의 세계를 열정적으로 추구하는 준은 그녀를 뒤로 한채 떠나버린다. 그 후 아나이스는 헨리의 적극적인 구애를 받고 주체할수 없는 열정에 점점 더 깊이 빠져들게된다. 1930년대 파리를 무대로 북회귀선의 작가 헨리 밀러와 그의 아내 준, 그리고, 이 부부를 동시에 사랑하게 된 여류작가 아나이스가 벌이는 쾌락의 여정을 고급스런 영상과 화술로 풀어낸 작품
