On March 22, four days after returning to his home in Andalusia, Luis de Vargas writes the first of his letters to his uncle and favorite professor at the seminary. He reports that his father intends to fatten him up during his vacation, to have him ready to return in the fall to finish his training for the priesthood. He mentions in passing that his father is courting a twenty-year-old, attractive widow, Pepita Jiménez; his father is fifty-five years old. Pepita had been married for only a short time to an eighty-year-old moneylender named Gumersindo. Luis is not eager to see his father marry again, but he promises his uncle not to judge Pepita before he knows her.

In an Andalusian village lives a rich and austere family whose son and heir worries his mother about his dissolute lifestyle. When cousin Consolation arrives, she changes their life like a joyful genius, and things start to change.

Based on Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger, and the Giacomo Puccini opera. The young, tubercular seamstress, Mimi, falls in love with the impoverished playwright, Rodolfo, but poverty takes its toll on their relationship. When Mimi meets a wealthy suitor, Viscount Paul, to ask him for financial help, Rodolfo dumps her.

Madrid, Spain, 1880. Angelina, daughter of the pompous Brigadier Marcial, is tempted by the womanizer Germán, who asks her to run away together, just after her boyfriend, Rodolfo, asks her to do exactly the same thing with him.
