1960년대의 프랑스 뉴웨이브의 시작으로 꼽는 장-피에르 멜빌(Jean-Pierre Melville) 감독의 1955년도 갱스터 영화 을 닐 조단 감독이 새롭게 리메이크한 작품. 영화의 제목은 여러번 바뀌었는데, 처음에는 '더블 다운(Double Down)'으로 정해졌다가 '정직한 도둑(the Honest Thief)'로, 다시 '선량한 도둑(the Good Thief)'으로 바뀌었다. 그러다 '정직한...'으로 복귀하는 듯 하더니 결국 현재의 제목으로 남게 되었다. 2500만에서 3000만 달러 사이의 예산을 들인 이 영화는 미국 개봉했을 당시에는 박스 오피스 상으로 크게 재미를 보지 못하였다. 2003년 4월 초 개봉하여 첫 주에는 9개관을 시작으로 점차 소규모로 확대 개봉하였는데, 4월말에 이르러서는 202개관을 통해 누적된 수입이 고작 2백만 달러에 그치는 등 뚜렷한 흥행의 기미는 보이지 못했다. 그에 반해 평론가들은 닉 놀테의 연기에 손을 들어 주고 아울러 매혹적인 스타일에 좋은 점수를 얹어주었다. 랄프 파인즈(Ralph Fiennes)가 냉혹한 미술상으로 잠시 등장하며, 유명한 에밀 쿠스투리차 감독이 도둑 일당 중 하나로 출연했다.
Moti, a ten-year-old Bengali boy, tells us about his country, his life and an encounter that marked his life, that of Paul Danvin, a French captain, who, with a heavy heart, has just let the scrap merchants of the sea attack the hull of his boat with a blowtorch. In Chittagong, Bangladesh, Paul finds himself without a crew, without papers and without a future. He takes the train to Dhaka, the capital, and meets Moti and her mother Alima. By instinct or by fascination, Paul follows them to the village of Rulipara, built on a strip of land protected from the Jamuna River by dykes. While the monsoon rages, and the Jamuna destroys the houses of Rulipara, condemning the population to a new exile, Alima and Paul engage in a desperate struggle to live their love without hindrance.

A grenade robbery has been committed. It bears the trademark of Rock and yet it is in fact Tango, a professional poker gambler who is its author. Rock is furious and sets out to find the usurper. He picks up his track, abducts Alice, Tango's mistress, and, by means of threat, tries to oblige Tango to go on holding up banks for him. Tango refuses but, surprisingly, Rock does not insist. Maybe because he feels more and more attracted to Alice. The two men end up becoming friends. But police superintendent Luther, who is after Rock, is drawing closer...

Three young men (Jacques, Pierre and Michel) share an apartment in Paris, and have many girlfriends and parties. Once, during a party, a friend of Jacques' tells him he has a quite compromising package to deliver, and asks him if he can leave it discreetly at their place. Jacques agrees and, as he works as a steward, flies away for a one month trip in Japan, telling Pierre and Michel about the package. Then, one of Jacques' former girlfriends drops a baby before their door, making Pierre and Michel believing it is the package they are waiting for. Their lives are then completely changed.

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin is raised by his father and his grandfather because his mother dies when he's still very little. He works as a handyman, studies the law at a university and travels the country as an actor before he becomes the celebrated playwright Molière who impresses firstly the Duke of Orleans and then even King Louis XIV.
