Geshe Tsultim Gyelsen 분)으로 환생한 아이일지도 모른다며, 제시를 부탄으로 데려가 환생 여부를 확인하게 해달라고 한다. 딘과 아내 리사(Lisa Conrad: 브리짓 폰다 분)는 인간이 환생한다는 말을 믿지 않았고, 제시가 혼란에 빠질까봐 걱정하면서도 승려들에게 호감을 느낀다. 그러던 중 딘의 절친한 친구가 파산하고 죽는 사고가 발생하자, 딘은 마음을 정리하기 위해 제시를 데리고 부탄으로 간다. 한편, 제시는 티벳 승려 노부가 준 '싯달타 왕자의 이야기'라는 책을 통해 싯달타(Siddhartha: 키누 리브스 분)가 왕자로 태어나서 행복한 나날을 보내다가 거리에서 생노병사의 고통을 보고 출가하여 부처님이 되기까지는 '중도'의 진리였으며, 이 세상의 모든 것은 인연에 따라 생겨났다 없어지는 무상한 것이기 때문에 거기에 집착하지 않아야 한다는 것과 연민과 사랑으로 주변을 대해야 한다는 것을 배우게 된다. 부탄에 도착하자 노부 스님은 환생 후보가 모두 세 사람이라며 나머지 환생 후보인 라주(Raju: 라주 랄 분)와 지타(Gita: Greishma Makar Singh 분)를 제시와 만나게 해준다. 사원에서 환생 여부를 확인하는 절차에서 세 아이가 모두 환생한 도제 스님으로 밝혀지는데...
