Peter Märthesheimer was a producer at Cologne’s public TV station, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, when he met Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 1972. He later worked with Fassbinder on DESPAIR and BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ, and, with psychologist Pea Fröhlich, wrote the scripts for LOLA and the other films in THE BRD TRILOGY. This interview was conducted in 2003.

베로니카 포스(Veronika Voss: 로젤 제흐 분)는 한때 잘 나가던 여배우였다. 그러나 나이를 먹고 시대가 바뀌면서 점점 영화제작사로부터 주연제의가 줄어든다. 그녀는 배우로서의 괴로움과 점점 입지가 좁아지는 자신의 위치에 대한 우울증 등이 겹쳐 모르핀을 처방해 주는 악덕 여의사 카츠 박사(Dr. Marianne Katz: 안네마리 듀링거 분)를 자주 찾아가게 된다. 급기야 그녀는 모르핀 중독자가 되어 카츠 박사에게 자신의 전 재산을 모두 주겠다는 계약서에 서명까지 하게 된다. 어느 날 베로니카는 비를 맞고 헤매이던 중에 스포츠 신문 담당 기자인 로베르트(Robert Krohn: 힐마르 다테 분)를 만난다. 로베르트는 베로니카에게 우산을 씌워주며 시가 전철을 타는 데까지 함께 하는데, 로베르트는 그녀가 유명한 여배우라는 사실은 알지 못한다. 베로니카는 자신을 한 사람의 인간으로 따뜻하게 대해주는 로베르트에게 인간적인 매력을 느낀다.

서른 여섯 해라는 짧은 생애에 만든 마흔 한편의 논쟁적인 영화들 중 파스빈더의 최고 걸작이라고 말할 수 있다. 세계 2차 대전이 끝나고 경제 기적을 만들어낸 독일사회의 병폐를 온 몸으로 겪으면서 자라난 파스빈더는 이 시기 자본주의가 빚어낸 모순과 타락한 인간상을 다수의 영화에서 다룬 바 있다. 조셉 폰 스텐버그의 에서 이야기의 뼈대를 가져온 에는 살아있는 색깔, 한 씬 내내 원을 그리며 도는 특이한 카메라 움직임, 팬으로 길게 움직이는 등이 멜로드라마의 틀 안에서 우화적으로 사용된다. 반자본주의적인 조악한(?) 영화형식과 너무나 염세적인 결말은 내내 영화를 보고 마지막 화면을 맞이하는 관객으로 하여금 가슴 서늘하게 한다. 그러나 파스빈더의 말대로 세상은 여전히 타락해 있고 가난한 자와 힘없는 자들이 설 자리는 여전히 없다는 점에서 파스빈더가 염세적인 것이 아니라 세상이, 인간이 시니컬하다는 것을 새삼 다시 절감하게 한다. 마음이 아프다. 안톤 체홉의 ‘푸른 천사’와 장 르노와르의 ‘게임의 법칙’을 인용한 풍자극이다
