Sinopse
In July 1956, together with the mountaineer Gaston Rébuffat, the actor and cellist Maurice Baquet made the first ascent of the south face of the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m/12,606 ft), a magnificent wall of red granite soaring up like a rampart above the Vallée Blanche (the White Valley) in the Mont-Blanc Massif. Thirty-two years later, as if to pay tribute to the memory of his friend Gaston, now deceased, Maurice Baquet once again climbed this mighty crag, suspended between sky and earth, behind Christophe Profit.

Montanha Polar Circus, 4 de maio de 1981. Três amigos que fazem alpinismo juntos, Laurie Skreslet (Eric Johnson), John Lauchlan (Jason Priestley) e Roger Marshall (John Pyper-Ferguson) fazem uma escalada rotineira e planejam, no próximo ano, tentarem o feito máximo de todo alpinista: chegar ao cume do Everest. Naquele dia John se contentava em escalar um outro trecho da Polar Circus, mas seus amigos estão sem tempo e os três descem. Após a partida dos amigos John decide escalar sozinho e acaba morrendo, mas não seu sonho dele. Em Calgary, Alberta, no Canadá, em abril de 1982, são apresentados os canadenses que tentarão vencer o Everest. Naquele dia, tirando algumas animosidades, era o começo de um sonho que continuou quando a equipe canadense chegou, em 22 de julho de 1982, em Katmandu, no Nepal. Apesar de todos saberem dos riscos, os vários imprevistos imponderáveis logo começaram a transformar o sonho num pesadelo.
Uma mulher problemática é enviada para uma região afastada da França para limpar um velho e desativado orfanato. Chegando ao local, ela descobre que não está sozinha e que o orfanato não está tão solitário e desativado quanto achava. Lá ela encontra uma das internas que ainda vive no local, junto com a antiga cozinheira. Tudo o que aparentava normalidade vai se transformando conforme estranhos acontecimentos se sucedem. A mulher passa a achar que está sendo perseguida e começa a duvidar de sua própria sanidade. Ao mesmo tempo, a cozinheira também pensa que a hóspede está ficando completamente louca. Para descobrir o que realmente está acontecendo, a hóspede vai mergulhar em segredos dos quais jamais imaginou e vai descobrir que certas coisas estão muito além de seu alcance.
