Sinopse
O golpe de estado fracassado de 23 de fevereiro de 1981, que começou com a captura do Congresso dos Deputados e terminou com a libertação dos parlamentares, colocou em sério risco a democracia espanhola.
Espanha, 1936. Higinio e Rosa estão casados á alguns meses quando começa a Guerra Civil. Higinio, temendo ser perseguido pelos rebeldes, decide usar um buraco escavado na sua própria casa como refúgio temporário…
Em 1944, na Espanha, a jovem Ofélia e sua mãe doente chegam ao posto do novo marido de sua mãe, um sádico oficial do exército que está tentando reprimir uma guerrilheira.
