Um compositor francês imigrante nos Estados Unidos, George Faure (Gérard Depardieu), tenta permanecer no país. Para conseguir o Green card, que lhe dará permanência definitiva nos Estados Unidos, se casa só no nome com uma americana, Brontë Parrish (Andie MacDowell), que precisa de um marido para alugar em Manhattan um ótimo apartamento, em um prédio proibido para solteiros. Porém problemas surgem quando eles são investigados pelo departamento de imigração.

Em busca de uma saída para evitar a destruição de seu planeta, seres extra-terrestres chegam à Terra. Eles possuem a forma de seres humanos, mas são bem menores.
