Para este projecto contribuíram milhares de pessoas em todo o mundo, que enviaram três mil horas de imagens. Coube a Brandon Litman escolher e editar todo este material, cujo trabalho resultou em "Um Dia na Terra", um documentário de 104 minutos sobre a humanidade.
Quem sabe o que o jornalista americano Jake Geisner (George Clooney) esperava encontrar em uma Berlim pós-guerra? Paz, talvez. Ou, ao menos, uma estória. Mas certamente não a bela Lena (Cate Blanchett), seu ex-amor. E também não uma trilha de segredo e decepção que une Lena a um jovem cabo (tobey Maguire), agora seu novo amante... E um assassinato que ninguém demostra interesse em resolver. A não ser Jake.
Uma nave espacial pousa em Washington DC trazendo o alienígena Klaatu e seu robô Gort. Eles trazem um ultimato aos líderes da Terra para que acabem com as guerras e a corrida armamentista, o que estaria preocupando os habitantes de outros planetas. Logo no desembarque, Klaatu é baleado por um soldado que o julgava inimigo. É levado a um hospital, onde se cura rapidamente e recebe a visita do secretário de Estado dos Estados Unidos, a quem pede ajuda do presidente para organizar uma conferência de líderes mundiais. O secretário encaminha sua proposta ao governo, que a rejeita.
