Mortimer Brewster é um jornalista e escritor conhecido por suas implicância com o casamento. Logo na cena de abertura nós vemos ele se casar na prefeitura. Agora, só falta uma rápida viagem para casa para informar as tias solteironas de Mortimer. Ao tentar dar a notícia, ele descobre o passatempo de suas tias: matar velhos solitários, como se fosse um ato de caridade, e enterrá-los no porão. E vai ficar pior.

Um garoto faz amizade com um ser de outro planeta, que ficou sozinho na Terra, protegendo-o de todas as formas para evitar que ele seja capturado e transformado em cobaia. Gradativamente, surge entre os dois uma forte amizade.
