O humor corrosivo que caracteriza os filmes do grupo Monty Python está afiadíssimo nas histórias de O Sentido da Vida. Nesse filme, a trupe de comediantes britânicos ganha a tela para satirizar a medicina, a igreja, os militares, o sexo, e tudo o que é levado a sério demais pelos seres humanos normais. O filme conta a história do mestre em manipular sua platéia, Andy Kaufman que conseguia provocar gargalhadas, silêncios profundos, lágrimas e até gritos. Ao convidar o público para ir tomar leite com biscoitos ou desafiar mulheres para lutas mistas, ele se especializou em criar atuações tão reais que até seus amigos mais íntimos nunca estavam certo de onde estava a verdade. Embora tido, entre outras descrições, como duende niilista, guerrilheiro Zen, comediante dadaísta e o primeiro artista de verdade, Kaufman sempre preferiu pensar que era simplesmente um homem da música e da dança.

Alvy Singer (Woody Allen), um humorista judeu e divorciado que faz análise há 15 anos, acaba se apaixonando por Annie Hall (Diane Keaton), uma cantora em início de carreira com uma cabeça um pouco complicada. Life has its downs for James, living with his mom in Chicago at 39, an aging performer at Second City, eating and weighing too much. Someone's remaking his favorite movie, "Marty," a role he'd love, but he doesn't even get an audition.
