Treze anos após o fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial, a sobrevivente do campo de concentração Lucia (Charlotte Rampling) e seu torturador Max (Sir Dirk Bogarde), atualmente o porteiro noturno em um hotel de Viena, se reencontram e voltam ao relacionamento sadomasoquista.

Um magnata da indústria farmacêutica, Anthony Leighton (Bruce Greenwood), é casado com a bela e arrogante Amber (Madonna). Tony alugou um barco para, junto com a mulher e amigos, fazerem um cruzeiro da Grécia à Itália, porém nada faz Amber feliz, com ela implicando com Giuseppe Esposito (Adriano Giannini), um pescador que trabalha no navio. Um dia Amber descobre que seu marido e convidados pegaram um bote para fazer um passeio nas cavernas das ilhas. Para piorar ele e Amber brigam por um sinalizador e acabam dando um tiro, que fura o bote. Eles conseguem chegar a uma ilha deserta. As diferenças sociais que existiam no início do cruzeiro acabaram totalmente, mas algo totalmente imprevisível está para acontecer com Giuseppe e Amber.
