Edwina Cutwater (Lily Tomlin) é uma mulher muito rica que não aceita a morte iminente. Desta forma ela aceita a proposta feita por Prahka Lasa (Richard Libertini), um mestre da meditação que diz ser capaz de transferir a alma de Edwina para o corpo de Terry Hoskins (Victoria Tennant). Só que, durante a transferência, algo sai errado e ela vai parar no corpo de Roger Cobb (Steve Martin), um advogado, cuja alma permanece em seu corpo. Desta forma Edwina passa a controlar o lado esquerdo do corpo de Roger, enquanto que o próprio apenas detém o controle de seu lado direito.
