Papai Noel sofre um acidente no telhado da casa de Allen, um bem-sucedido vendedor de brinquedos (Tim Allen). Como não pode continuar seu trabalho, Noel pede para que o vendedor entregue os presentes para as crianças naquela data e explica como fazê-lo. Ele começa a ajudar, mas percebe que está engordando e sua barba crescendo. E com o tempo, Allen transforma-se no próprio Papai Noel.

Esta obra idealizada pelo famoso Dr.Seuss, apresenta-nos o infame Grinch, um ser amargurado e irritadiço que tem um coração com apenas metade do tamanho normal. A este ser, surge-lhe uma ideia, acabar com o Natal de uma vez por todas. Assim que chega disfarçado a Whoville, uma cidade que fica perto da sua cabana, conhece a pequena Cindy Lou Who, a única dos Who que tem as suas próprias dúvidas sobre o Natal. Para tentar compensar, ele promete ao menino que lhe dará qualquer coisa que ele peça no Natal. O garoto então pede o "Turbo Man", o brinquedo sensação do momento e sonho de todas as crianças. Acontece que já véspera de Natal e o brinquedo não existe em lugar nenhum, com todos os estoques já esgotados. Ele então se propõe a cumprir a promessa, não importando o quanto isto lhe custe. Mas, além de se meter em uma série de complicações, ainda tem de ser mais esperto que um carteiro, que tem o mesmo objetivo dele e igualmente obstinado no seu intento.

Buddy (Will Ferrell) foi criado no Pólo Norte e, apesar de ser um humano, acaba se transformando em um elfo. Após ter problemas na comunidade em que vive, Buddy decide largar tudo e partir rumo a Nova York. Seu objetivo é encontrar Walter (James Caan), seu pai, mas logo se decepciona ao saber que ele é um grande sovina e não acredita em Papai Noel.

Um Grinch que odeia o Natal resolve criar um plano para impedir que os habitantes da pequena cidade de Quemlândia possam comemorar a data festiva. Para tanto, na véspera do grande dia, o Grinch resolve invadir as casas das pessoas e furtivamente roubar delas tudo o que esteja relacionado ao Natal.

Quando um velhinho agradável que afirma ser Papai Noel é acusado de insanidade, um jovem advogado decide defendê-lo, argumentando no tribunal que ele de fato é Papai Noel. No desfile do Dia Ação de Graças da Loja de Departamentos Macy's, o ator que interpreta Papai Noel é flagrado por ter bebido por um homem velho bigodudo. Doris Walker, o maluco diretor de eventos especiais da loja, convence o velhinho a assumir o trabalho. O velhinho revela-se uma sensação e é rapidamente recrutado para ser o Papai Noel da saída da principal Macy's. Embora bem sucedido, Walker investiga e descobre que ele se chama Kris Kringle e que ele afirma ser o verdadeiro Papai Noel. Apesar das garantias do médico de que Kringle é inofensivo, Doris ainda tem dúvidas, especialmente porque ele tem cinicamente convencido à si mesmo e especialmente à sua filha, Susan, para rejeitar todas as noções de crença e fantasia.

Nesse filme de natal, os Muppets recontam a clássica história "A Christmas Carol".
