Após a morte de Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep), uma proprietária rural do interior do Iowa, seus filhos descobrem, através de cartas que a mãe deixou, do forte envolvimento que ela teve com um fotógrafo (Clint Eastwood) da National Geographic, quando a família se ausentou de casa por quatro dias. Estas revelações fazem os filhos questionarem seus próprios casamentos.

Anna (Julia Roberts) é uma fotógrafa bem sucedida, que se divorciou recentemente. Ela conhece e seduz Dan (Jude Law), um aspirante a romancista que ganha a vida escrevendo obituários, mas se casa com Larry (Clive Owen). Dan mantém um caso secreto com Anna mesmo após ela se casar e usa Alice (Natalie Portman), uma stripper, como musa inspiradora para ganhar confiança e tentar conquistar o amor de Anna.

Balachandran Unnithan (Jayaram) is a singer who falls in love with Ambika, a singer from his own troupe. They both end up getting married. Balachandran's family has been longing for a male child to inherit the family's wealth, but his elder brothers were having only female children. Ambika gets pregnant. Balachandran realizes that his wife is carrying a daughter, and not a son. Later, he meets his old classmate and best friend, Padmarajan, whose wife Hema was also pregnant. She was bearing a male child. However, their babies were swapped by mistake by Balu's mother soon after delivery. Both Padmarajan and Balu must keep this as a secret to see their children. When Balu's cousins discover this, the babies get kidnapped by the antagonists.

Gopalakrishnan is the son of Gopalan Nair, who rears cows and sells milk for a living. Gopalan Nair, now in his sixties, finds it hard to continue with his job and calls for the assistance of Remanan, the president of milkmen association and the only friend of his son Gopalakrishnan. Even though Gopalakrishnan could not pursue his studies after his sixth standard, he is not ready for any hard work and is only interested in making money the easy way.

Zakhariah (Jagathy Sreekumar) is a private banker who has returned from the gulf. He has a very straight forward life with his wife Molly (Uravashi) and their daughter Teena. He gets an open offer from Urmila (Jyothirmayi), wife of an architect that she is willing to continue a relationship with no strings attached. From then on, Zakhariah begins to ignore business, family and gets into an illicit affair.

Mukundan (Sreenivasan) is looking for a bride. He meets Seethalakshmi and likes her. But he is threatened by Raghavan (Cochin Hanifa) who wishes to marry Seethalakshmi . Despite this Mukundan and Seethalakshmi gets married.
