Telly Paretta é uma mãe que luta para lidar com a perda de seu filho de 8 anos de idade. Porém, quando ela conhece um homem que teve uma experiência semelhante, Telly embarca em uma busca para provar a existência de seu filho e sua sanidade.

Um soldado da União, ferido em combate durante a Guerra de Secessão, acaba encontrando refúgio e um lugar para se curar dentro de um internato para mulheres localizado em território Confederado. Lá, o soldado se recupera, mas acaba conquistando o coração de algumas das mulheres no processo.
