A spacecraft lands on Europa, Jupiter’s icy moon, in temperatures of minus 260 degrees and searing radiation. Its mission: to penetrate the surface and send a probe into a watery realm beneath the ice. Meet Bill Stone, a preeminent underwater cave explorer and inventor who is developing robots to carry out that mission one day. Now, he and his team hope to test an autonomous underwater vehicle called Endurance in Antarctica’s icy waters. As we watch Endurance plunge into the depths, CGI animation helps us envision how its descendant would fare on a real mission to Europa. We see it hurtle across the solar system, finally dropping slowly into Europa’s liquid realm, where we follow it through its routines. Getting a robot through the ice and into the oceans of Europa will be an order of magnitude more difficult than anything Stone’s team has done so far.

A bordo da nave Leonov, uma tripulação que reúne americanos e soviéticos, está a caminho de um encontro com a Discovery, estacionada em órbita fixa. Aquilo que eles não sabem é que estão a caminho, também, de um futuro desconhecido para os humanos, e que o seu destino poderá ficar nas mãos do antigo computador da Discovery, o HAL-9000.
Desde a “Aurora do Homem” (a pré-história), um misterioso monólito negro parece emitir sinais de outra civilização, assim interferindo no nosso planeta. Quatro milhões de anos depois, no século XXI, uma equipe de astronautas liderados pelo experiente David Bowman (Keir Dullea) e Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) é enviada ao planeta Júpiter para investigar o enigmático monólito na nave Discovery, totalmente controlada pelo computador HAL-9000. Entretanto, no meio da viagem, HAL-9000 entra em pane e tenta assumir o controle da nave, eliminando um a um os tripulantes.
No ano de 2500, a Terra passa por um difícil período de sobrevivência enquanto o sol fica cada vez mais perto de seu desaparecimento completo.
