The Barbarians (2010)

Universal Hotel combines objective and subjective elements. In it, Thompson chronicles his research into experiments by Dr. Sigmund Rascher at Dachau in 1942, in which he nearly froze a Polish prisoner and then got a German prostitute to warm him up; Thompson uses photographs from archives in six countries and recounts a subjective dream set in what he calls the Universal Hotel.

Para as famílias burguesas que habitam monótonas casas pré-fabricadas, idênticas umas às outras, o tédio solapa qualquer iniciativa. Em roupas de baixo, biquínis ou sem nada, as pessoas se arrastam pelo asfalto. A temperatura aumenta. Paira no ar uma atmosfera de violência latente. Vai começar uma jornada de música e jogos, sexo e violência. Dias repletos daquela estranha sensação de amortecimento do desejo de amar, da perda do amor e, o mais terrível, da esperança de um dia encontrá-lo. Dias de Cão, em registro documental, se passa nos "dias de cão", referente ao período mais quente do verão europeu, entre 24 de julho e 23 de agosto. O nome vem da constelação de Cão Maior, a mais presente nos céus durante o verão.

Every year, Bruno makes a tour of all the wine stands, without setting foot outside the Show’s premises and without ever finishing his wine trail. This year, his father suggests they finish it together, but a real wine trail, across the French countryside. Accompanied by Mike, a young, quirky taxi driver, they set off in the direction of France’s major wine regions. Together, they are going to discover not only the wine trails, but also the road that leads back to Love.

Ten years after Mondovino, his analysis of the increasingly standardised wine production in France, wine expert Jonathan Nossiter picks up the thread again and shows what it means to be rooted in the soil you're working on. During walks through the vineyards and relaxed gatherings with a group of alternative Italian wine growers, he trades experiences and arguments. What looks like a bucolic paradise, where intelligent people produce wine according to time-honoured and organic methods, is actually revealed to be a battleground. The DOC association, which is supposed to look after the interest of independent vintners, promotes winemakers who produce vast amounts in a standardised quality; and the agricultural industry with its hygiene regulations excludes traditional methods of production. The only thing saving the landscape from being totally destroyed is affluent foreigners using the old vineyards as summer holiday homes.
