Johnny trabalha isolado e solitário na fazenda da família, descontando sua frustração em bebidas e sexo casual. Quando seu pai contrata Gheorghe, um imigrante romeno, para ajudar Johnny na fazenda, o novo companheiro traz para ele sentimentos e emoções que ele nunca teve antes.

Em 1987, nos últimos dias do comunismo, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) e Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) dividem um quarto num dormitório estudantil. Elas são colegas de classe na universidade de uma pequena cidade romena. Gabita está grávida e o aborto é ilegal no país. Otilia aluga um quarto num hotel barato. Lá elas recebem um certo Sr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov), chamado para resolver a questão. Mas, ao saber que Gabita está com a gravidez mais adiantada do que havia informado, Sr. Bebe aumenta as exigências para o serviço. Ele cobra um preço que as duas não estão preparadas para pagar.

In a devastating story rife with visual metaphors, Romanian director Mircea Daneliuc traces the slow mental disintegration of a confirmed gambler, using his disorder as an allusion to a greater national and social disorder. Set in the 1930s, the middle-class gambler meets an elderly man who seems to bring him good luck at the gaming tables. Rather than treasure his friendship and the good fortune it brings, the gambler takes advantage of his friend, and by his actions drives the man to suicide. Unable to reconcile his own mental demons, the gambler wanders through the house of his dead friend, and his experiences there only serve to unsettle his mind more and more and more. In the last reels of the film, the fantasies of the hero's deranged mind take over.

To the Rider his moped is everything. As a pizza delivery driver it is his livelihood. As a breadline straddling, immigrant father it is his family’s anchor. It takes his wife to work. It gets his daughter to school. So when one night the moped is stolen, his world collapses. He has to get back his bike – or replace it – in whatever way possible, before his next shifts starts. If he fails, he won’t just lose his job, he will lose it all. He tries to ask the few familiar faces for help in this unfamiliar, disorienting city. However, as he runs out of time and his options are wearing thin, his moral compass begins to crack and he grows more and more willing to forgo his conscience in order to save himself and his family.

This magic place is threatened by the evil stepmother's plan to sell the grove that protects the secret land to developers -- a decision that puts the woman on trial before this perfidy can be realized.
