One for the Book (1940)

Um dos clássicos absolutos do Natal, este musical conta com os insuperáveis Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera-Ellen e Rosemary Clooney que cantam temas de Irving Berlin como Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep ou o lendário White Christmas. O filme, sobre dois ex-soldados que tentam montar um espetáculo de Natal na estância de férias de um antigo general, é um semi-remake de Michael Curtiz do também natalício Holiday Inn, de 1942, para o qual foi criado o tema do título e que ganhou então o Óscar de Melhor Canção.

O filme conta a história de Guy Holden, um célebre bailarino estadunidense, que está viajando pela Europa com seu amigo, o advogado Egbert. No meio do caminho para a Inglaterra, conhece Mimi Glossop, que viaja com sua tia. Em Londres, os dois se encontram casualmente e Guy se apaixona por Mimi, mas sem saber que se trata de uma mulher casada em processo de divórcio. Mimi e sua tia voltam a se encontrar num hotel e começam os equívocos.

Um dançarino americano ensaia um número de sapateado em seu quarto de hotel em Londres e acaba incomodando a vizinha do quarto de baixo. Logo ambos começam a se apaixonar. Mas um certo mal-entendido pode colocar tudo a perder...

We begin with some musical numbers, notably the various pages of Green Pastures all joining in on a song, The Thin Man entering The White House Cookbook and exiting much fatter, and The House of Seven (Clark) Gables singing backup to Old King Cole. The Three Musketeers break loose, become Three Men on a Horse, grab the Seven Keys to Baldpate, and set the Prisoner of Zenda free. They are soon chased by horsemen from The Charge of the Light Brigade and Under Two Flags and beset by the cannons of All Quiet on the Western Front. All this disturbs the sleep of Rip Van Winkle, who opens Hurricane so that everyone is (all together now) Gone with the Wind.
