A família Griswold está de férias e resolve ir para o "Walley Park", um parque temático. O pai Clark (Chevy Chase), sua esposa Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), e os filhos Audrey (Dana Barron) e Rusty (Anthony Michael Hall) pegam a longa estrada de Chicago até a Costa Oeste. No meio do caminho, encontram com o primo Eddie (Randy Quaid) e a tia Edna (Imogene Coca), e acabam tendo que levá-la até Phoenix.
