Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) é um joalheiro carismático de Nova York que está sempre tentando ganhar mais dinheiro. Depois que faz uma série de apostas arriscadas, parece que o futuro vai sorrir para ele. Mas, em sua busca pela bolada final, Howard precisará de uma atuação perfeita para equilibrar negócios, família e os inimigos que estão cada vez mais próximos.

A história conta a partir de uma visão estética hiper-realista a vida de Martin, um homem de quarenta e poucos anos desesperadamente só que busca, através do sexo, alguma companhia, para passar a noite que cada vez parece ser mais previsível. Sob esta desolação constante, cocaína, álcool e uma e outra orgia em um estado de prazer momentâneo todas as noites.
