Los Angeles, 1995. O roteirista Robert Sandrich (Peter Sarsgaard) vai até um estúdio, pois o produtor Jeffrey Tishop (Campbell Scott) quer comprar “The Dying Gaul”, uma história de Sandrich. Ele está muito interessado em vender o roteiro, pois precisa muito do dinheiro, mas não está disposto em fazer algum tipo de concessão, pois o texto é bastante autobiográfico. Robert, que é homossexual, o escreveu após a morte do seu amante, Malcolm Cartonis (Bill Camp), que também era seu agente. Desta forma Sandrich decide ele mesmo negociar com Jeffrey. Jeffrey apresenta sua esposa, Elaine (Patricia Clarkson), para Robert e deixa bem claro que não o quer apenas como roteirista. Paralelamente Sandrich fica cada vez mais íntimo de Elaine.

Os níveis de tensão começam a aumentar e os nervos começam a aflorar conforme uma festa de aniversário se aproxima do clímax e os convidados vão revelando suas naturezas e suas personalidades reprimidas quando um homem heterossexual, convidado por acidente, se vê em meio à uma festa gay.
