Greg Sestero se aproxima do excêntrico Tommy Wiseau após uma aula de atuação e os dois desenvolvem uma intensa amizade ancorada no sonho em comum de fazer sucesso nas artes dramáticas. Juntos eles partem para Hollywood, onde Tommy, cansado de ser rejeitado em testes, decide produzir, financiar, dirigir, escrever e protagonizar – ao lado do melhor amigo – o longa que o catapultará ao estrelato "The Room".
