Joe Pendleton (Warren Beatty), um jogador de futebol americano do Los Angeles Ram, é mandado acidentalmente para o Paraíso décadas antes da sua hora. Provisoriamente, habita o corpo de um mega industrial que foi assassinado por Julia Farnsworth (Julie Christie), sua esposa, e Tony Abbott (Charles Grodin), seu amante. Mas a morte não foi notada, assim quando Joe passa a habitar seu novo corpo Julia e Tony nada entendem, pois ela tinha certeza que o marido estava morto.
