Winwood e Clapton cruzaram caminhos musicais em 1969 com a formação do Blind Faith, um grupo pioneiro na fusão de rock e blues em um tremendo sucesso de estúdio e palco. Apesar da aclamação da crítica e do público, a banda teve vida curta com apenas um álbum e uma breve turnê de 1969 que estreou em 12 de julho no Madison Square Garden e terminou em 24 de agosto no Havaí. Desde então, Winwood e Clapton permaneceram amigos, mas só se apresentaram juntos algumas vezes ao longo dos anos para uma música ocasional em um evento de caridade.
