Iringannoor Bharathan Pisharody, professor at the Sanskrit University, a very knowledgeable man with a keen interest in the Vedas, astrology and Kathakali, author of several critical works and winner of numerous awards, is the central character of Vadakkum Nathan. Meera (Padmapriya) is his student and murapennu. Both families have agreed to their wedding and a date has been fixed. But when the auspicious day dawns and the bride arrives at the mandapam the groom has disappeared. Years pass. Mukundan Unni (Jayaram) is a black magician and an exorcist. He is not really keen about his father's black magic skills and is wiling away his time with two dumb cronies in a remote village. There he meets a girl named Malu (Poonam Bajwa), who has no memories about her past but falls pretty easily for the hero after a couple of songs. But they get separated soon after. Some years later, he is called by a wealthy family to exorcise a spirit (Muktha George) from their palatial house, Shenoy Mandir. He meets Malavika there but she doesn't recognise him.

Ramji Tiwari and his sister, Parvati, had their parents pass away at an early age. Ramji is a skilled cook and is familiar with all aspects of vegetarian cooking. He arranges Parvati's marriage with the Mishra family, promises to pay a large sum of dowry, which he manages to get by promising to get married to a wealthy man's daughter.

His father meets with Chandi a marriage broker who proposes a match for Georgekutty with a rich family, but they would have to lie a little about their economic status. George Kutty resists first, but pressure from his dad who sees the marriage as a way to get money to payback the family debts, he agrees. Unfortunately the Itichen finds out the truth about the family and confronts them. He makes Georgekutty and his family agrees to certain terms for the wedding to take place including that Georgekutty and his wife have to stay in their house with them. After the wedding Georgekutty sees that he and visiting family and friends are disrespected and that he is controlled and held like a prisoner at Itechan's house. Georgekutty comes up with a plan to get back at his father in law which forms rest of the movie.
