Flora Gomes is a Bissau-Guinean film director. He was born in Cadique, Guinea-Bissau on 31 December 1949 and after high school in Cuba, he decided to study film at the Instituto Cubano del Arte y la Industria Cinematográficos in Havana.
Shot fourteen years after independence, Gomes's Mortu Nega (Death Denied) (1988) was the first fiction film and the second feature film ever made in Guinea-Bissau. (The first feature film was N’tturudu, by director Umban u’Kest in 1987.)

Luta de libertação para uns, guerra da África para outros: o conflito que, entre 1963 e 1974, opôs o PAIGC às tropas portuguesas é visto sempre em perspectivas diferentes por guineenses e portugueses. Mais curioso é que, apesar do conflito, houve sempre cumplicidade: 'Não fazemos a guerra contra o povo português, mas contra o colonialismo', disse Amílcar Cabral, e a verdade é que muitos portugueses estavam do lado do PAIGC. Não por acaso, foi na Guiné que cresceu o Movimento dos Capitães que levaria ao 25 de Abril em Portugal.

Com a ajuda de Pierre e de Yano, Vita encena a sua própria morte e ressurreição, para mostrar à família e amigos que tudo é possível se tiverem a coragem de ousar.

Exquisitely photographed and filled with archetypal figures to create a poetic look at nature's revenge against those who would exploit her. It is set in the forest village of Amanha Lundju, a place where the birth of children is celebrated by the planting of a tree. The trees are considered spiritual twins. But for every tree planted, the rapacious state destroys many more for firewood and lumber.
