Daniel recebe a inesperada, e indesejada, visita um amigo que não vê desde a sua infância. O amigo está obcecado pela sua filha e insiste para que Daniel a conheça. Daniel faz o possível para se livrar dele e tentar esquecer o incidente. Nessa mesma noite o seu amigo suicida-se. Laura, esposa de Daniel, sugere que vão ao funeral de seu amigo. Lá, eles conhecem a sua filha, uma menina, com quase sete anos, que desde a morte de seu pai viveu num orfanato. Laura convence todos que a melhor coisa é a menina ir viver com eles. Mas a presença da menina na casa começa a ter um efeito adverso sobre o casal quando os medos e lembranças que Daniel pensou ter enterradas há muito tempo, rastejam de volta para dentro da sua cabeça. As mesmas obsessões e medos que tiraram a vida ao seu amigo começam a tomar controle de Daniel. A crescente sensação de isolamento envolve Daniel na casa, que até a chegada da menina, pensava que lhe pertencia.
