Nora Brentano as a child
Em 1930, Maria Brentano (Valentina Cortese) e sua irmã mais nova, Nora (Audrey Hepburn), fogem para Londres após seu pai ser assassinado por um ditador europeu. Sete anos depois, durante uma viagem a Paris, Maria encontra por acaso Louis (Serge Reggiani), e descobre que ele está planejando um atentado contra o ditador. When Celia Crowson (Roc) is called up for war service, she hopes for a glamorous job in one of the services, but as a single girl she is directed into a factory making aircraft parts. Here she meets other girls from all different walks of life, and begins a relationship with a young airman.
