The film title refers to the Communist party's appeal, after Lenin's death, to enlarge its membership.

The picture completed, she is grieved and then angered to discover that Ivan's interest rests solely in it, and how it will fare at the exhibition. She pleads with him in vain. The wounded Russian Orloff, treated in a Japanese hospital, is watched over with devotion by the volunteer nurse Hanako, who seems charming to him. On Hanako's father's refusal, Lieutenant Orloff kidnaps the little geisha and brings her back to Moscow. Far from her native country, little Hanako no longer seems so pretty to the fickle Orloff who now prefers the beautiful Rayskaya. Unable to overcome her pain, the little geisha prefers to die.

Directed by Vladimir Gardin and Yakov Protazanov, this two-part epic was the most expensive Russian film at the time and smashed box office records. It is now considered lost, with only a 4 minute clip surviving.

Stung by their negative reaction to him, Tolstoy becomes increasingly preoccupied with the problems of the poor.
