Esta obra cinematográfica é baseada no histórico documento narrativo “A Odisséia”, escrito por Homero. Aqui Ulysses (Kirk Douglas) realiza, após 10 anos de guerra na batalha por Tróia, a uma jornada por terra e mar para tentar voltar para casa, em Ítaca, e para sua esposa Penélope (Silvana Mangano), depois de ter perdido da frota de navios durante uma tempestade. Em sua Odisséia, ele percorre mares e caminhos desconhecidos, enfrentando batalhas contra o gigantesco ciclope Polifemo, soldados, encarando a fúria e as mentiras dos deuses na figura de Poseidon, e derramando seu sangue e suor para tentar permanecer vivo, mesmo já tendo perdido todos os seus companheiros. Até que finalmente, após 20 anos de luta, em sua terra natal, ele enfrente o último e mais perigoso desafio…

A young woman, her sister-in-law and her ten year old daughter are violently traumatised by invading Austrian soldiers. Later, in Verona, both woman discover they are pregnant. After a suicide attempt, one has an abortion the other keeps her child - and both faces struggles with friends and family as they return to their homes.

After murdering her illegitimate baby, Isabella (Tania Weber) pins the blame on her innocent cousin Consuelo (May Britt). Despite the strenuous efforts of her attorney-lover DeSylva (Ettore Manni), Consuelo is found guilty and shipped to a penal colony along with several other female prisoners.

But Shylock has been nursing a grudge against Antonio's insults, and makes unusual terms to the loan. And when Antonio's business fails, those terms threaten his life, and it's up to Bassanio and Portia to save him.

Northern Italian Stefano marries sweetheart Maria by proxy while working abroad in Canada. However, she is mistakenly accused of her sister's crime of abandoning her own child and, when Stefano finds out, he decides to call off their marriage.

Goethe's drama and Gounod's opera "Faust" is treated here like a movie rather than the usual photographed-opera from a stage method. Faust is a man who sells his soul to Mephistopheles in exchange for eternal youth, and the latter, with guileful glee, leads Faust to disaster along the paths of pleasure. Marguerite falls in love with Faust, and suffers as a consequence.

Martha Eggerth heads the cast of Casta Diva, but the central character is famed Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini, here played by American actor Phillips Holmes. Paying but scant attention the facts, the film concentrates on Bellini's colorful love life. Evidently the film went through several rewriting processes, as witness the curious performances of Donald Calthrop and Arthur Margetson, whose characters do complete about-faces halfway through the story. Amidst so many British accents, Martha Eggerth's Polish intonations seem out of place, but she photographs beautifully and sings quite well. Casta Diva was attractively filmed on location in Naples. Not to be confused with the 1954 remake (by Gallone himself) or to the English language version "The Divine Spark" (also directed by Gallone and starred by Eggerth).
