Things go horribly wrong for Ola (Karolina Porcari) and her friends when she tries to help journalist Agata (Katarzyna Bujakiewicz) find an interesting subject for an article. Placing a personal ad in the newspaper inadvertently invites the attention of a dangerous person who's now stalking them all, apparently in desperation to know their blood types.

Zanussi has described the film as his most autobiographical work. A young boy in post-World War II, Communist-dominated Poland, whose father's decision to remain in Britain after the war has made his family politically-suspect with the local Party authorities, is sent by his mother to stay with an "aunt" (in reality an old family friend) in Warsaw.

Henry Kesdi is a silenced classical composer and a survivor of the Holocaust. He is coaxed out from retirement by an inspired musicologist, Stefan, who convinces him to compose a complex symphony on his neglected piano. As a help Kesdi gets his new musical secretary. His loyal wife reluctantly accepts her as his young lover.
