Gloria is set against the backdrop of a rural landscape slowly disappearing in modern Portugal. The small border town of Vila de Santiago, once a booming trade center for illegal trafficking, is about to become a ghost town, as a new motorway is to bypass the city and the railway station is being closed. Its stationmaster, Vincente, is preparing to retire. Many young people have moved out, leaving the children to be brought up by the elderly, including thirteen-year-old Glória and her friend Ivan. Glória's life suddenly changes with the arrival of Vincente's younger brother, Mauro, who has just come out of prison and has some old issues to settle. Mauro begins to charge around the station on his motorbike, while Glória's friendship with Ivan is put to test on account of her attraction to older Mauro.

Cristina is twenty years old. Her father was declared missing in action during the war in Angola many years before. One day in church the girl meets a man about fifty years old who tries various times, unsuccessfully, to make the sign of the cross. The man is called Cristovão. A few days later the two meet again. The man offers to help her look for her father. A relationship based on memories and confessions is formed between them. But soon they each return to their own solitude.

A viagem é acidentada. Perdem o automóvel e quando querem regressar os problemas surgem.

Podemos dizer que Jorge é um homem feliz. Chega a casa no fim de um dia com muitos problemas, como todos os outros. Nessa noite vai se encontrar com um industrial japonês negociar um novo emprego, para abandonar o seu atual de professor e voltar a trabalhar como químico. Mas, ao regressar, encontra alguém em casa. Alguém que não conhece. A partir daí tudo vai ser diferente.

João, um jovem desajustado e mal-amado à procura de respostas, abandona os estudos e, através das influências e contactos do pai, começa a trabalhar num escritório. Rodeado de mulheres, acaba por se envolver com Inês, a sua chefe, uma mulher solitária que vive assombrada pela morte do irmão na guerra colonial. Mas se, inicialmente, a sofisticação e a posição social de Inês entusiasmam João, no final ele acaba por preferir Leonor, uma rapariguinha de valores mais tradicionalistas. A obsessão e o ciúme levam Inês à loucura, que põe termo ao seu sofrimento matando João a tiro.
