Devido à pouca informação sobre a doença e suas características peculiares, os ataques de histeria por vezes são confundidos com possessões demoníacas, o que faz com que Charcot tenha que provar a seriedade de sua pesquisa. Um dia, chega ao hospital a jovem Augustine, de apenas 19 anos, que teve um ataque durante o trabalho. Logo ela se torna objeto de estudo de Charcot, que passa a dedicar um bom tempo à garota. Augustine acredita que Charcot possa curá-la e, aos poucos, desenvolve uma relação especial com o médico.
