1941, the Warsaw ghetto. Filip, a young Polish Jew, with his beloved Sarah are getting ready to perform in a cabaret to earn a living. During the premiere, a shootout takes place, during which Sara, as well as Philip's relatives sitting in the audience are killed. Two years later, the man works as a waiter in the restaurant of an upscale hotel in Frankfurt.
Jana and Kristin have just completed their acting studies. They don't like each other but they have to travel together to an audition at a theatre in Munich. During the short journey, things don't go exactly as planned. Thrown into the real world, they both realize they're in the same boat and rediscover each other. They become friends- maybe even more - and right at that moment, they are separated from each other.
When a young man starts his early morning run through the woods, he has no idea what this special day will have coming as a surprise for him - but how could he, it's his birthday.
