O marido de Ingeborg Hold abre uma mercearia e a vida está cada vez melhor para eles e seus três filhos. Mas seu marido adoece e morre. Ingeborg tenta manter o negócio, mas por causa de seus empregados inúteis e preguiçosos, ela acaba tendo de fechá-lo. Sem dinheiro, ela tem de se mudar para um abrigo e é separado de seus filhos. As crianças são levadas por pais adotivos, mas ela precisa conseguir alguma forma de sair do abrigo e reaver seus filhos.
