Quando um Monet avaliado em 100 milhões de dólares é roubado do Metropolitan em Nova York, Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan), um bilionário que está acostumado a ter tudo que deseja, não é nem ao longe considerado suspeito, mas Catherine Banning (Rene Russo), uma investigadora contratada para reaver a pintura (por 5% do seu valor), tem certeza que Thomas é o responsável.
