Início da 2ª Guerra Mundial. Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) é uma arrogante aristocrata inglesa, que possui uma fazenda de gado na Austrália. Ela viaja ao país para reencontrar o marido, mas ao chegar descobre que ele foi assassinado. Para não perder a fazenda, ela se une a um vaqueiro (Hugh Jackman) e ao garoto aborígene Nullah (Brandon Walters). Juntos eles precisam levar um rebanho de gado até Darwin, no interior do país.

Christian (Ewan McGregor) é um jovem escritor que possui um dom para a poesia e que enfrenta seu pai para poder se mudar para o bairro boêmio de Montmartre, em Paris. Lá ele recebe o apoio de Henri de Toulouse-Latrec (John Leguizamo), que o ajuda a participar da vida social e cultural do local, que gira em torno do Moulin Rouge, uma boate que possui um mundo próprio de sexo, drogas, adrenalina e Can-Can. Ao visitar o local, Christian logo se apaixona por Satine (Nicole Kidman), a mais bela cortesã de Paris e estrela maior do Moulin Rouge.

Meanwhile, his mother wants to talk to him about her impending cancer surgery, the police want to know what he saw, and his friend Ricko wants an alibi. Jared's cracking under the pressure.
