O rancheiro Taw Jackson (John Wayne) sai da prisão disposto a se vingar de Frank Pierce (Bruce Cabot), que ficou com tudo o que era seu. Planejando assaltar um carregamento de ouro, Taw forma uma gangue com seu antigo inimigo Lomax (Kirk Douglas), um velho louco (Keenan Wynn), um índio (Howard Keel) e um jovem beberrão (Robert Walker Jr.).

In 1846, a reporter for the New York Herald joins a wagon train bound for the Oregon Territory. He hopes to confirm a rumor that President Polk is sending in soldiers disguised as settlers in order to strengthen American claims to the Territory.
