Uma compilação de filmes de diversos formatos projetam múltiplas versões de pessoas vencidas pela vida. “Para um homem, o ser vencido ou derrotado na vida depende, não da realidade aparente a que chegou —mas do ideal íntimo a que aspirava.” Assim afirmava Eça de Queirós no lema do Vencidos da Vida, grupo informal que reunia personalidades da vida cultural portuguesa no final do século 19.
Padre Mendes
Zacarias, um jovem português de 17 anos, sonha em viver grandes aventuras. Por isso, ele se alista no Exército durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. É enviado a Moçambique, na África, com a missão de defender a colônia portuguesa da invasão alemã. Zacarias, porém, contrai malária e é deixado para trás quando seu pelotão segue rumo ao front de batalha. O rapaz não se dá por vencido e parte, sozinho, para alcançar o esquadrão. Ainda sofrendo os efeitos da enfermidade, ele passa a ter dificuldade em distinguir a realidade das alucinações que vem tendo. Em sua jornada, o garoto encontra —ou acredita encontrar— animais selvagens, desertores alemães e colonos perdidos. O roteiro de Mosquito é baseado na história real do avô do diretor, que foi um dos soldados mandados a Moçambique na guerra.
