A série acontece na enfermaria de neurocirurgia do hospital "Rigshospitalet" de Copenhagen, o principal hospital da cidade e do país, apelidado de "Riget". "Riget" significa "o reino" ou "o reino" e leva alguém a pensar em "dødsriget", o reino dos mortos.

Pouco tempo após o Dr. Helmer chegar ao hospital dinamarquês Reino, acontecimentos estranhos surgem repentinamente - uma ambulância fantasma surge durante a noite, vozes são ouvidas no elevador, fetos desenvolvem-se de forma sobrenatural, uma loja maçônica realiza seus cultos ali, entre outros casos - abalando qualquer fé na ciência. E pacientes, médicos e funcionários terão de conviver e trabalhar nesse ambiente sinistro e totalmente incompreensível.

This performance, and the film that documents it, is superb! From its comically vulgar opening in the Garter Inn, where we are introduced to a rotund (and slightly pathetic) Falstaff - in a richly nuanced performance by baritone Gabriel Bacquier cocooned in prosthetic girth (his face is too thin for the enormity to be real) - to the supremely beautiful nocturnal magic of the Finale in Windsor Park, Solti is lovingly accompanied by the sublime Vienna Philharmonic. They play with such delicacy and elan what is an undeniably delicate score, that I lost myself in the instrumentation, forgot it was Verdi, thought it was Mozart, and couldn't remember which Mozartean Opera this was. The woodwinds and strings are singled out for special praise: perfect intonation and phrasing doesn't begin to do them justice. They breathe life into this score, propel it forward, act as a Chorus commenting on the action.

Neste filme mágico, Bergman filma a ópera "A Flauta Mágica" de Mozart em Estocolmo, no belo teatro de Drottningholm do século XVIII numa conjugação perfeita entre drama, música e cinema. O olhar de Bergman transforma "A Flauta Mágica" num espetáculo completo com uma simbologia sutil mas poderosa, tornando a ópera de Mozart, se é que isso é possível, numa obra ainda mais bela.
