Honza was born in 1974 into the cheerless era of socialism in Czechoslovakia. At that time, his parents Jana and Petr lived in one room in the apartment of Jana's divorced mother and her widowed grandmother. A few years later, the family moved from Prague to Liberec where Petr found a job and a little house for the family. When Honza was born, his father began writing a family chronicle and he has continued to do so for 37 years. "Private Universe" show not only the life of one ordinary family, but also how the Czech society has changed in last four decades. Who are we, where do we come from and where do we go?

Após a Tchecoslováquia ser invadida pelo exército nazista em plena 2ª Guerra Mundial, diversos pilotos tchecos decidem voar até a Inglaterra. Lá eles tomam parte da Real Força Aérea Britânica, a RAF, e passam a combater o próprio exército nazista. Entretanto, ao retornar ao seu país-natal após o término da guerra, dois amigos são presos em um campo de concentração ao serem considerados anti-comunistas.

A vida do violinista Frantisek Louka é um verdadeiro inferno. Demitido de uma importante orquestra da Tchecoslováquia, ele ganha a vida tocando em funerais no crematório da cidade. A sorte parece sorrir para ele quando decide casar com a prima de um dos coveiros, apenas para que a mulher possa obter a cidadania tcheca. Louka recebe uma ótima quantia em dinheiro, sem nenhuma obrigação… a não ser cuidar do filho de sua nova mulher, que resolveu desaparecer de uma hora para a outra, deixando a criança para trás! O nome do menino é Kolya, uma criança carinhosa e cheia de vida que está prestes a transformar, para sempre, a vida do rabugento Louka.

In this movie, TV sets are full of life. If a person is in TV (e.g. because it was filmed on the street) it has a double that's right in the TV set. This double needs energy from the true character to survive. Each time, the real human watches TV, his Double will pull life energy from him. So there's a mysterious Death-serial. Many persons die in front of their TV set and nobody knows why. Olda, the main character, is one of the persons, that get more and more weak. He is near death, till Fisarek, the natural healer appears. He teaches Olda how he can resist this magic force and how he can fight it.

The facts are grouped under several general headings (paganry, the spread of Christianity, renaissance, baroq and modern times) with allusions to the modern life of Prague and Praguers that has its roots in those times.
