Christian (Ewan McGregor) é um jovem escritor que possui um dom para a poesia e que enfrenta seu pai para poder se mudar para o bairro boêmio de Montmartre, em Paris. Lá ele recebe o apoio de Henri de Toulouse-Latrec (John Leguizamo), que o ajuda a participar da vida social e cultural do local, que gira em torno do Moulin Rouge, uma boate que possui um mundo próprio de sexo, drogas, adrenalina e Can-Can. In New Zealand in the 1860s the native Maori people fought the British colonials to keep the land guaranteed to them by treaty. The warrior Te Wheke fights for the British until betrayal leads him to seek utu (revenge). The settler Williamson in turn seeks revenge after Te Wheke attacks his homestead. In this emulation of film noir, the investigative structure does not create suspense; the dialectic murderer/victim does not exist. The crime is fabricated bit by bit, like the staging of a spectacle, and it is in the traditional tools of seduction (the spiked heels) that the weapons will be hidden. Ultimately, the crime Nadja achieves makes her neither a triumphant heroine nor a victim.
