Durante os prelúdios da primeira grande greve operária da cidade, operários que protestavam na porta de uma fábrica no Brás são atacados pela polícia, resultando na morte do jovem sapateiro espanhol José Martinez. O filme mostra de forma onírica o enterro de Martinez em uma erma rua operária. Em algum momento da procissão fúnebre, o espectro de Martinez desperta e vaga por ruínas de vilas operárias até chegar, por uma fresta no tempo, ao ano de 2017.
